Le Geria is Lanzarote’s wine growing region producing wine from some of the world’s oldest grape varieties in the ideal climate. With abundant cheap flights to Lanzarote from Monarch, this could make the perfect trip for wine lovers.

Lanzarote is the easternmost of the Canary Islands, a Spanish territory in the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 125 km from the coast of Africa. The climate of the Canary Islands has earned them the name of ‘Islas Fortunadas’ or the Fortunate Islands with mild winters and dry warm summers. It’s the perfect holiday destination for sun worshippers.

It’s also the perfect climate for wine production and La Geria, the wine growing region of Lanzarote is a protected area. The vineyards themselves make a stunning vista. Single vines are planted in pits in the rich volcanic soil with small stone walls around each pit. This agricultural technique is designed to harvest rainfall and overnight dew and to protect the plants from the winds. The vineyards of La Geria are a World Heritage site and merit a visit, even if you’re not a wine lover. If you love your wine, however, you’re in for a treat. The Malvasia wines produced here are considered some of the world’s best and regularly feature at wine awards.

One popular way to sample the wine and culture of La Geria is to take a tour. Start at the Wine Museum for a quick overview; move on to visit the wineries and bodegas along the way, never forgetting to sample some of the amazing wine along the way. Every bodega will have tasting rooms for visitors to taste and buy their wines. Start with one of the ancient wineries like El Grifo (the Griffin) with graceful barns and cellars made of black volcanic stone standing around a large cool shady courtyard. Move through the region to one of the brand new and thoroughly modern wineries such as Bodega Stratvs with state of the art computer controlled vats and stainless steel barrels stretching back deep into the hillside. La Geria is a treat for all the senses, from the stunning vistas and fresh country air to the taste of the wine itself. This is truly one of the best destinations possible for wine and sun lovers anywhere in the world.
