The Republic of Ireland is full of ancient history and wonderful culture; it’s no wonder that this majestic country is a popular destination for travellers.
Not sure where to start? Grab a Guinness and turn on some Flogging Molly and check out these recommendations:
Explore Trim Castle
For those who fancy increasing their knowledge of Irish history, start your visit with a trip to Trim Castle. Situated in County Meath, about 28 miles Northwest of Dublin, Trim Castle was completed in 1117 after a 30-year build. Surrounded by beautiful greenery, it is easy to see why this castle has been described as the finest in Ireland.
Due to health and safety reasons, the castle can be explored with a tour guide, although visitors do have access to the grounds. Disabled access is limited, as there are a lot of steep stairs and narrow bends, it’s always best to call up if advice is needed.
Pucker up and smooch the Blarney Stone
Located in County Cork is Blarney Castle, and at the top of its tower is the famous Blarney Stone. Planting a kiss on the rock, according to an old wives tale, means the kisser will be gifted with eloquence. But, there’s a proper way to give it a smooch. Lay on your back, with your shoulders hanging off the edge, whilst your hands grip onto iron bars. Then, lean back and kiss the nearly 600-year-old stone.
Don some green and schedule a visit around St. Patrick’s Day
Be in town for St. Patrick’s Day. This celebration of the most famous Irish patron saint results in an all-out party. On March 17, the shops, banks, and supermarkets close, and the streets are filled with local music, food and a buzzing atmosphere. A stop in any local pub in the country will create memories to last a lifetime (and possibly a hangover to match).
Visit Limerick
Situated in the country’s Shannon region, Limerick isn’t just beautiful, it’s full of history. In fact, it was a Viking settlement in the early 800s. With historic monuments, an old castle, a quaint countryside village and lush greenery – it is a great place to just admire the surroundings or become wrapped up in the past.
Take a hike
Ireland’s lush rolling hills and farmland yield nature to explore. There are plenty of places in the country to head outdoors and get some fresh air. If you do plan to take part in a hike, make sure you book your travel insurance from InsureandGo.

I need to get to Ireland!
We should plan a trip!!
This post doesn’t help my insane desire to spend a lot of time in Ireland ASAP. Love it!
Ireland is beautiful! The only thing I did on this list was drink on St. Patrick’s Day. Which was pretty amazing. But, it also means I need to go back.
Lots of great ways to soak in the history of Ireland! Nice post!
Thank you! There are a lot of ways to soak in the history. My favorite is the Guinness tour and having a nice pint overlooking Dublin.
You know what? I’ve been searching high and low for a bit of eloquence. Now that I know where to find it I’m on the first plane out of here.
Thanks for letting me know.

In-eloquent fool
I’m coming with you.
Hi guys,
just came across your blog post. I live in Ireland (but am German) and I have traveled quite a bit of the green isle. If you are going, I recommend the Greeway in the West, it is just amazing to take in the scenery between Westport and Achill Island.
Oh and I stayed with Noreen in Brooklodge B&B in Westport, a truly Irish accommodation just as you would expect it to be; warm and welcoming.
Enjoy your trip!
Julia
