Looks good. You may end up skipping some countries though and taking things a bit slower. But if you keep your plans open you can see how you feel.

In Italy I would really recommend heading south. Venice, Florence, and Rome are all gorgeous but if you want to escape the crowds then try Matera in Basilicata. It’s an absolutely stunning town made up of ancient caves carved into the rock on a steep ravine. It’s cheaper in the south too!

I totally agree — the route is just an idea in my head right now. I really plan on spending a good deal of time in Eastern Europe, so the more I think about it, the less likely I will be to spend much time in Portugal, Spain and France. I definitely want to be in Germany for a bit, and Italy. I’ve been to Italy before but want to take more time there and really explore, work in hostels, etc. And the Adriatic countries really are where my heart lies, so will surely be there much longer than the others. I don’t want to be in Western Europe during the peak of summer and tourist season.

Thank you for the suggestions in Italy!! Will have to check them out!

Looks like a fantastic itinerary! Will you be couchsurfing, staying in hostels or with friends? Or maybe a combo of all three.

Sounds great in any case – I’ll be you’re getting so excited!

I am super excited. Less than two weeks!! I will pretty much be doing hostels. I plan to work in exchange for room and board whenever possible — it gives me more time in a city to explore and learn, and saves me money.

That sounds like a great idea – better to not spend precious trip $$$ on accommodations…much better spent on local cuisine, or cocktails! :)

Can’t wait to hear all about it!

Great itinerary. Looks like we won’t quite be crossing paths (unless you extend your trip – hope that happens)!

I sincerely hope to stay longer. When do you head out?

Yay looks awesome! I’m glad you are giving Eastern Europe the attention it deserves.

Oh, me too!! I want to soak in as much of Eastern Europe as possible. It’s my current love.

Between France and the Netherlands, don´t forget about Belgium :-) As a Belgian, I particularly like Gent and Brussels. Bruges is pretty but boring, while Gent and Brussels have an interesting mix of architecture, history, night life, culture, musea, everything I like in a city :-)
If you stop somewhere near, let me know, maybe we could have a drink together :-)
When in Germany, you should definitely spend some time in Munich! I spent a semester in a little town near the city, and I really liked it!

I briefly was in Belgium eight years ago, but didn’t really get a chance to explore. Thank you for the suggestions! Will definitely try to make it there. And will certainly let you know so we can grab a drink!

Sweet itinerary! Keep us in mind if you go to Greece in June as we’re thinking about heading there too! We’ll be in Egypt and it’s just a short hop over to Greece, and cheap may I add!

    • dtravelsround February 22, 2010 at 2:16 pm · Reply

I want to go to Egypt real bad, but don’t want to travel solo there. We could meet there, too! In Greece thinking of Santorini and then a few other cities, like Olympia, etc. (not Athens).

Sounds awesome! We are about to embark on our trip as well. Since you are spending some time in Ireland, I would highly suggest this little fishing village about a thirty minute train ride from Dublin- Howth is really small, but has great hiking, food and views. It was my favorite part of Ireland because it’s not as dirty as Dublin and the people were really nice.

    good luck!

Thank you so much for the suggestion! Where abouts are you traveling? Maybe we can meet up during our adventures!

I would LOVE to, but don’t think this trip will include Australia. :(

If you really want to go to Egypt you could arrange to go with a backpacker tour group. There are some really cheap tours that go from the UK and you could probably jump on from somewhere in Europe or just meet them there… It’s something I really regret not doing when I was in the UK!

    • dtravelsround March 11, 2010 at 5:09 pm · Reply

Sounds perfect!! Will def look into that! I know it won’t be from the UK, most likely from E Euro or N Africa. Thanks for the suggestions!

If you make it to Crete, go up to the north-west corner (Chania area) – along the north coast and down the west coast are some lovely, reasonably quiet places with gorgeous beaches. Falassarna, Kalives, various others. If you’re planning on going, let me know and I’ll dig out more info. Keep away from the middle of the north coast unless you like wall-to-wall hotels and nightclubs and where it feels more like Ibiza on a bad day!

    • dtravelsround June 14, 2010 at 2:57 am · Reply

Oooh, thanks!! I will let you know. I need to do some planning and figure it out in the next few days. Once I have wifi that works and won’t cut me off mid-booking of flights!!! Def. no middle of the north coast.
